Information COMING HOME TO ROYAL OAK
The City of Royal Oak’s 100th birthday is fast approaching! Incorporated in 1921, the city has grown from a small village surrounded by woods and farms to a thriving urban community. To celebrate its centennial, a group of community volunteers is organizing an annual week-long, city-wide homecoming celebration called ROAM HOME to take place October 19-27, 2019.
- The mission of the ROAM HOME effort is to invite former Royal Oak residents to come home and celebrate and to highlight community service opportunities for all residents and visitors.
- The organizers intend that this will be an annual homecoming celebration in the City, with special emphasis on the City’s centennial year.
Two events will bookend the week of activities.
- On October ??, there will be a Volunteer Celebration from 5:00-9:00 p.m. at the ???. Each organization/club/group will be able to have space to showcase their organization and to describe any special event that they will host during the week, as well as opportunities for the general public to engage with their group throughout the year. Music, children’s games, and refreshments will be available.
- On Sunday, October 27, the RO DDA will host its annual Spooktacular event downtown.
COMMUNITY GROUPS AND ORGS ARE THE FOCUS
All community groups (clubs, groups, businesses, nonprofits, block clubs, whatever) are invited to create an event during the festival week to celebrate their organization and the City’s centennial. Musical groups might put on concerts. Service clubs might hold a blood drive or clean up a park or have a giant garage sale. Scout troops might plant trees. The RO Fire Department might offer CPR training. The high school Chess Club might host a chess tournament at a downtown coffee shop. Restaurants might host specialized live entertainment one evening. (80’s night for 80’s grads… 90’s night for 90’s grads, etc.) Homeowner groups might have a block party. Use your imagination to find an event that fits your style and your budget!
For the time being, the RO Chamber of Commerce is providing logistical support for ROAM HOME. The ultimate goal is to form a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organization to be the umbrella organization.

WHO’S IN CHARGE OF THIS?
The concept for this event was born out of discussions at various city meetings by City Hall leadership, The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, Royal Oak Schools, Royal Oak Commission for the Arts, Royal Oak Restaurant Association, Royal Oak DDA, Royal Oak Historical Society and others.
ARE YOU THROWING AN EVENT FOR US?
No. (Technically we are throwing one event, the kickoff event.) The goal is to connect each community group that desires to take part under a huge “Roam Home” umbrella. We wish to encourage each and every civic group, nonprofit, business, school group, chess club, school reunions, etc… to be a part of the celebration by holding their own events and activities. Do something you do all year long… but do something the week of the celebration. Then we can collectively market everyone’s events that week and share audiences and amplify each other’s efforts.
IS THERE A COST TO PARTICIPATE?
No. This is a grassroots effort to unite our community. As the need for infrastructure and staff to manage and market the celebration increases we anticipate that we will need sponsorships to offset those costs. The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce will provide logistical support until such time as the organizing group can be spun off into it’s own 501c3 non-profit organization.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
Submit your event or activity on the form linked below. We will start regular monthly meetings in November to coordinate efforts and connect people to resources they might need to pull off their events. A reunion may need to contact a restaurant to host their event. A chess club may want to use a school building for their event and need to find the right person to talk to. A band may want to throw a concert and need to find a partner venue. All of this connection will take place through the collaboration of monthly meetings throughout the year.
IS THIS EVENT JUST FOR OLD PEOPLE?
Not at all! There’s a bunch of old photos on this website indeed, but we encourage groups and organizations of all ages and eras to do something fun during the celebration! If a T-Ball team of 5 year olds wants to throw an event, we encourage it! If a group of millennials wants to have a speed dating event, we encourage it! …and if a group of older folks wishes to throw an event celebrating their 60th high school reunion we want to encourage it!
WHAT IF OUR GROUP DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS TO DO SOMETHING THIS YEAR?
Awesome! Then the inaugural year of this event is for you, as we hope to have the largest community-connection volunteer clearing house Royal Oak has ever seen at the Farmer’s Market to kick things off. Sign up to get a table and tell people about your group and how they can volunteer in the future.

We want everyone to feel welcome at all events, and we intend to apply for 501c3 nonprofit status. So please – no political campaigns, no political action committees, no candidates campaigning, no political signs, in short – nothing political at any event under the ROAM HOME umbrella.
